Color Cues from Nature from Benjamin Moore!

Connecting to the natural world is essential to our well-being. One way to do so is to create a home environment that invites elements from the outdoors inside. In much the same way a spray of flowers can brighten our moods, you can romance your home with a bouquet of colors gathered from the garden and other natural surroundings.

What colors in nature are you drawn to? The softer pastels of spring, the intense hues of summer, the warm vibrant colors of autumn, or the subtle neutrals of winter? You’ll notice that all colors in nature “go together.” Step outside and take a look around. Nature affords some of the most stunning color combinations. Take a cue from your garden and note that the tone and intensity of the colors complement one another (think of the clear greens and pinks of a budding tree or the mellowed hues of grassy sea oats and golden dunes along the shore). This same principle holds true for your home’s color schemes.

You love your vibrant red zinnias that are your garden’s showstoppers, but you’re thinking such a vivid color may be too overwhelming to use on your walls. Don’t shy away from any color dear to your heart. Instead, use it as an accent in your room. Consider painting one wall in the color as a focal point, or include pillows, throws and accessories that pay homage to your favorite hue.

When looking to nature as inspiration, don’t forget to consider what’s right outside your window. If you’re lucky enough to have a beautiful view, think about incorporating it into your room’s overall design, much like a beloved framed piece of artwork, and use color to showcase it. Warm brick or burgundy walls would complement a deep green forest view, while clear, crisp blue walls would highlight the sight of coppery colored canyons. Pair a mid-toned neutral, such as a grey or smoky blue with a vista that captures the delicate hues of a shoreline view for a more subtle, seamless look.

Recall a favorite vacation destination. What colors do you most vividly remember? Is it the lavender that brushed the walkways in Umbria? The velvety green rolling hills of Ireland? The brilliant red, yellows and oranges of autumn trees in New England? Whether you paint the interior of a cupboard that houses a trip souvenir or dedicate an entire room to your special place, bringing those colors into your home will delight you. The stunning blue and white room you created that your visitors so admire will secretly carry you back to that magical week in the Greek Isles every time you see it.
